After days of speculation and rumors, the deal finally went through today to send former 49ers quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Cheifs. In return, the 49ers will get the 34th overall pick, and a conditional mid-round pick in 2014.
This is a great trade for both sides.
Despite Smith's veteran status and strong play last year, before the concussion, the Cheifs were smart about it. They did not buy too high on him. On the other side, the 49ers were not left empty handed. They will have the 31st and 34th pick, which means room to turn that pick around and make another trade for, say, Darrelle Revis.
Ultimately, they should be glad they got much. He wasn't worth much more to another team. Andy Reid is a smart guy. He was well aware of the fact that, of all the coaches Smith was under, there was only one that made him work.
